From Pain to Purpose: The Story Behind Compassionate Wings of Hope
Bishop Kenny Abdulsalam’s early life gave him a deeply personal understanding of what it means to experience hunger, instability, fear, and the feeling of being forgotten.
At the age of 14, his life changed drastically when he was forced to leave home and found himself living in an abandoned school building. Survival became part of everyday life. There were times when finding food meant searching through dumpsters, and uncertainty became a constant companion.
Those experiences remained with him long after that chapter of his life ended.
Years later, Kenny shared his story and experiences with his wife, Rev. Loutrecia Abdulsalam. As they talked about suffering, poverty, homelessness, and the people who often fall through the cracks, Loutrecia began envisioning something more structured—a nonprofit organization that could turn compassion into practical action.
The idea for what would become Compassionate Wings of Hope was conceived by Rev. Loutrecia Abdulsalam.
Drawing upon Kenny’s lived experience, their shared Christian faith, and a mutual desire to serve people facing hardship, Loutrecia began developing the vision into an organization. She refined and changed the organization’s name, organized its structure, and carried out the work necessary to formally register the nonprofit.
Together, Bishop Kenny Abdulsalam and Rev. Loutrecia Abdulsalam became the co-founders of Compassionate Wings of Hope International Foundation.
Their different experiences and contributions became complementary parts of the organization’s foundation.
Kenny brought the perspective of someone who knew personally what it felt like to be hungry, displaced, frightened, and overlooked. Loutrecia brought the vision to transform those experiences into an organized nonprofit capable of reaching and serving others.
Their faith also shaped the mission. Matthew 25:35–36 became a powerful reflection of the kind of service they wanted the organization to embody:
“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me…”
Compassionate Wings of Hope was established around a commitment to compassion, dignity, practical assistance, and hope.
Through outreach efforts that include food assistance, housing support, mentoring, and other forms of community service, the organization seeks to reach individuals and families experiencing difficult circumstances and remind them that they have not been forgotten.
For Bishop Kenny, that mission is deeply personal:
“I know what it’s like to be hungry, scared, and forgotten, but I also know what it’s like to see light in the darkness.”
For Rev. Loutrecia, compassion required more than recognizing a need. It meant creating the structure through which people could actually be served.
What began with one man’s painful experiences and one woman’s vision to turn compassion into organized action became a shared mission.
Compassionate Wings of Hope International Foundation stands today because Bishop Kenny and Rev. Loutrecia Abdulsalam chose to transform experience, faith, compassion, and vision into service.
Their story is a reminder that painful experiences can become pathways to purpose—and that compassion becomes most powerful when it moves beyond feeling into action.
